Service delivery and local government data from Media Hack
Media Hack Collective (MHC) has focused on several national and local governance issues over the years including a regular review and comparison of the State of the Nation Addresses by the sitting president. Examples: What are the president’s priorities? (2021), Six State of the Nation Addresses and 10 years of President Zuma SONAs).
MHC has also looked at education issues such as schools built using asbestos, pit toilets, matric results and internet access.
More broadly MHC has also investigated service delivery issues such as load shedding, the petrol price, unemployment rates and South Africa’s water supply.
On a national level, MHC have numbers on the age of South Africa’s parliamentarians, and we have unpacked South Africa’s leadership looking at gender representation and salaries.
In March 2020 MHC launched the Coronavirus in South Africa dashboard, which is broken up into different sections. The dashboard tracks a broad range of data on Covid-19 in South Africa, including the national dashboard which details the country’s active cases, number of tests, hospital admissions, deaths and vaccinations.
There is also a provincial dashboard which breaks down the coronavirus according to the nine South African provinces, as well as district data. This tab includes visualisations of the provinces’ cases, deaths, recoveries and active cases. We also rank them from worst affected to least affected.
Most of the data collected for the dashboard is made publicly available here.
