Reporting on Local Government Elections webinar: 19 October
The last in the series of the South African National Editors’ Forum’s local election training webinars will be held on 19 October 2021. It is part of SANEF’s ongoing efforts to provide journalists with election training and reporting resources, which are easily accessible on the SANEF election portal.
The virtual training session will focus on how to report on the November 1 elections and results, using data supplied by the IEC. Journalists will be able to use a local government and elections data dashboard developed for SANEF by OpenUp to compare and analyse how parties fared in 2021 compared with the 2016 election results.
The data dashboard is a comprehensive online platform that provides an array of datasets to provide context to the elections. Though the dashboard is focused on the local government elections, it also provides a demographic lens of a municipality, from the population size, service delivery standards, previous voter turnout, age and gender distribution; as well as budgets and financial health of municipalities.
Journalists can use the dashboard to provide in-depth coverage of any particular municipality, as explained in two of the earlier webinars, How to use the Dashboard and How to report on Municipal Finances.
The webinar on 19 October focuses entirely on election stories to tell, angles to take, and data sources to use during the last two weeks of the campaign period, on election day, during the results announcement period and in the weeks thereafter when parties try to negotiate coalitions and agreements to set up new councils.
The training session will be presented by a panel of media experts including award winning veteran journalist Raymond Joseph, Aasra Bramdeo from the SABC’s election results team and Izak Minnaar from SANEF.
